Arcadia has long been a desirable Central Phoenix neighborhood since it was first developed originally as an exclusive suburban subdivision of large estate homes in the early 1920s. With historic roots of Phoenix dating back to the Salt River Reclamation project and canal system built off of an expansive network of flood irrigation canals, residents in Arcadia have been able to affordably and easily grow lush green lawns and mature trees. The area’s agricultural and citrus production heritage is still visible today with a high prominence of mature citrus trees among estate homes. Arcadia stands out at the foot of Camelback Mountain among Phoenix’s desert landscaping with it’s large and lush green lots and a family friendly feel with quiet streets and a diverse mix of mid century ranches, historic estates, contemporary new builds, and other styles.
The area remains in high demand because of the unique irrigation system, citrus groves, a quality school system, a strong and active neighborhood association, proximity to neighboring communities and relatively easy access to downtown Phoenix. The natural boundaries of the Arizona Canal on the south and Camelback Mountain on the north have kept the area quiet and insulated from traffic. These advantages are attracting many young families to the area. The Arcadia-Camelback Mountain Neighborhood Association outlines in their mission statement some of the unique aesthetics that they want to preserve in Arcadia that make the neighborhood so recognizable: large setbacks from the street, side yards with lots of space, low profile homes, expansive lawns, and citrus groves.
