Al Beadle is one of Arizona’s most notable mid-century modern architects.  He attended no formal school of architecture, but after serving in the Navy as part of the Seabees during WWII, he began his career as a designer and building in Phoenix in 1950.  Al Beadles work has covered a wide rang of architectural types, from custom single family houses, to multifamily complexes, to high rise apartment buildings, and from warehouses to commercial to retail and office buildings.  Al Beadle communities include several condominium and loft-style town homes, and one master planned neighborhood of single family detached homes named Paradise Gardens.

Beadle’s buildings are structurally and materially expressive: gridded wood or metal frameworks, infilled with panel systems of glass, masonry, or stucco. He routinely restricted his material color, and finish palettes to enhance compositional unity and visually distinguished the structural grid from whatever is adjacent to it. The result each time is a clearly articulated structural system defining an easily comprehensible building form.  Interiors are continuous spatial volumes, rather than delineated, individual rooms, and are finished in much the same way as the exteriors, with materials tending to be polished smooth, painted white or gray, and patterned to highlight the ordering system.  Transparency is one of the most notable features of Beadle, with the use of expansive glass floor to ceiling to flood interiors with light and enhance our perception of his buildings as pavilions.
